Library Lingo for Normal People: Circulation

A guide to help non-librarians understand the terms and phrases we librarians throw around willy-nilly.

Contact/Library Info Links

What is circulation?

"Circulation," "circ," the "circ desk," or any variation of those terms refer to the place where you check things out.

Circulation is also the name for the group of people in the library in charge of checking things in and out, reshelving, and borrowing materials from other libraries.

Circulation Desk Services:

  • Check-out books
  • Return library materials that you have borrowed
  • Place a hold on a book that is currently checked out or do so through the library catalog
  • Renew books (also available online through My Library Account), and pay overdue fines

Please Note: Your SBU ID Card is required to check-out, renew, or request library materials.

Still stumped?

Use the Contact links to the left to contact a librarian by phone, e-mail, or instant message. We're glad to help! In addition to the reference librarian who is on duty, you can also contact the library liaison for your academic area for help using resources related to your program.
