Educational Research: Preliminary Searching

Using limiters in book searches

If you are a distance student it is more beneficial for you to have books in electronic form. Note when you are using Search Everything, you modify the results with the limiters on the left hand side of the screen.

  • run your catalog search
  • Click "modify search"
  • Select "ebook" under "Add Limits" -  "Other Formats"
  • Hit submit
  • Your results are now limited to items available as ebooks

What if my article is not full text?

When you find an article that is not full text, check to see if it is available at SBU.

  • Grab the title of the journal from the results page
  • Go to Journals A to Z (Library - Research Tools - Journals A to Z)
  • Drop the title into the search box
  • Select title and click search
  • If we have the journal, it will come up with a list of available databases
    • select the one that has the coverage date of your article
    • Clicking enter will bring up the journal and you will select the appropriate dates until you find the one you need
    • Then scroll down to find your article

If it is not in A to Z, you can request the article through interlibrary loan (see link below)

Making a preliminary search

The library now has a "Search Everything" feature. This single box will search articles, movies and books on your topic.  To use "Search Everything"

  • Go to the library home page (this link should open in a separate tab, so you can toggle back to the instructions)
  • Enter a search term in the box
  • Hit enter

When the results come up you can use limiters on the left hand side to limit by date, language, peer reviewed (ALWAYS check this when you are looking for articles, but not books). You can also limit by provider (SOCIndex, Academic Search Premier, etc.) if you want to only search those databases.

If you want to use the advanced search,

  • hit advanced search
  • put your search term in the box
  • enter additional search terms, limiters for subject, language, date range, etc.
  • It is best if you do NOT limit to "full-text" at first
  • hit search

You can then add more limiters as above.
