The real question is: “What does it mean to be a Christian?” In simplistic terms, a Christian is a Christ follower or a person who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. So, the answer to the question of how one becomes a Christian seems simple, follow the teachings of Jesus. So, what does Jesus teach?
- God, through his Son, created the world and every human in it to have fellowship with himself.
- When God created the world, he gave humans the freedom to choose whether they would love him.
- The first created being, Adam, chose to disobey God and sin entered the world through him. That sin infects all humans. (Romans 3:11)
- The penalty for sin is death. It is a death that begins spiritually as separation from God. It ends physically in death and eternal separation from God. (Romans 3:23)
- However, God not wanting anyone to perish sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for sin so that we, humans, might have eternal life. Eternal life is a gift from God not a prize earned by our efforts.
(Romans 6:23; John 3:16-17)
- To become a Christian one must recognize that he/she has done wrong and deserve the penalty for that wrong and then chooses to accept God’s gift as demonstrated through his Son’s sacrifice to pay for that sin. (Romans 10:13)
- Follow Jesus’ teaching.
If you would like to accept Jesus as your Savior, you may ask God right now. Pray and ask God to forgive you of your sins, that you would like to accept his free gift of salvation through his Son’s sacrifice, and that you would like to follow after Jesus.
