In developing Program-Level Student Learning Outcomes, Southwest Baptist University Libraries acknowledges two significant documents that serve as a framework for the learning standards it embraces–the Association of College & Research Libraries’ Information Literacy Standards and SBU’s student learning outcomes. It is the intent of the library faculty to provide meaningful, yet measurable instruction to support students in the learning process.
I. The student will be able to explain the information need. (CE & CT)
a. The student will be able to determine his/her research focus.
b. The student will be able to identify search strategies for his/her information need.
c. The student will be able to modify search strategies for his/her information need.
II. The student will be able to use sources in research. (CT)
a. The student will be able to use multidisciplinary and/or subject-specific sources in his/her research.
b. The student will be able to select interlibrary loan for resources outside of the University Libraries’ holdings.
c. The student will be able to collect additional information on a topic from bibliographies and works cited lists.
III. The student will be able to evaluate information for incorporation in research. (CT)
a. The student will be able to differentiate between authoritative/unauthoritative sources for research projects.
b. The student will be able to assess information for relevance to the research focus.
IV. The student will be able to demonstrate the ethical use of information in research. (CT)
a. The student will be able to choose a discipline-appropriate citation style.
b. The student will be able to use copyright-compliant images.
c. The student will be able to demonstrate safe and ethical data collection and use.
V. Applies research findings to professional practice. (CT)
a. The student will be able to answer clinical questions using evidence-based sources.
b. The student will be able to synthesize research in order to identify professional best practices.
VI. The student will be able to identify the library as a place in the learning process.
a. The student will be able to select the library as a physical place of study.
b. The student will be able to recognize the library as a virtual presence in the research process.
