North Carolina Earthquake

by Coleen Rose on 2020-08-11T14:34:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

North Carolina experienced it's largest quake in one hundred years, and several aftershocks.  https://www.foxnews.com/us/5-1-magnitude-earthquake-sparta-nc-report  The quake was also felt in Virginia, South Carolina and Tennessee.  This quake appears unrelated to the New Madrid fault zone.

"The USGS estimates the chance of more aftershocks as follows: Within the next 1 Week until 2020-08-18 13:00:00 (UTC):

  • The chance of an earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher is 28 %, and it is most likely that as few as 0 or as many as 4 such earthquakes may occur in the case that the sequence is re-invigorated by a larger aftershock.
  • The chance of an earthquake of magnitude 5 or higher is 1 in 200, such an earthquake is possible but with a low probability.
  • The chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6 or higher is 1 in 2,000, such an earthquake is possible but with a low probability.
  • The chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher is 1 in 20,000, such an earthquake is possible but with a low probability." -- https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/se60324281/oaf/commentary
